Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases have attracted considerable interest in recent years. A paradigmatic example of 1D SPT phase is the famous Haldane phase of the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain with non-trivial spin-1/2 edge states. In this talk, we describe richer 1D SPT phases that can be stabilized by introducing an SU(N) symmetry in the problem. SU(N) microscopic lattice models in the context of ultracold fermions loaded into optical lattice or in ladder geometry are introduced. It is shown that all SPTs phase for N=3 and N=4 are stabilized in these models.
